Dear fellow explorers of origins,
I'm writing to you from sunny Barcelona, Spain, where the vacation season has officially begun this week. In August, nearly all of Spain shuts down for a much-needed rest. With the normalization of remote work, more companies now allow employees to work from their summer homes, creating a better work-life balance.
In this newsletter, I'm sharing new ideas for having a more connected, fun, yet relaxing vacation. My own plans include building Rolife models, rewatching the entire Harry Potter saga, enjoying delicious Spanish cuisine, staying active (I recommend Capable—my friend Adri's home workouts are fantastic!), doing some DIY projects in our summer house and spending quality time with family and friends. For me, this creates the perfect restful and connected summer—combining activities I love with people I cherish, while maintaining just enough work and creativity to keep me passionate and focused.
What does your ideal summer look like? What are your plans for this month? Even if beach trips or extensive travel aren't possible, what weekend activities might help you disconnect and reconnect with yourself?
This week:
As summer unfolds across Europe, I'm sharing travel trends, creative holiday ideas, and a special curated list of books and shows to enjoy during your time off. Plus, don't miss the Vacation Reset Challenge workbook to help you reconnect with what truly matters this season.
Bonus:
For those of you visiting Barcelona this summer, I've created a guide featuring my favorite places to explore. Hope you find it helpful!
🟡 ORIGINS – Cultural Forecast
This Week’s Signal: Friendtrips & Skillcations Lead Holiday Travel Trends
“Friendtrips” and “skillcations” are redefining holiday travel, especially among Gen Z and young adults. “Friendtrips” see groups of friends or even strangers coming together for memory-rich group holidays, often organized around shared interests or goals. These trips create space for real world connections away from digital life, often using social platforms for inspiration yet emphasizing authentic relational experiences. Meanwhile, “skillcations” blend leisure with personal development by centering travel around learning a new skill—whether that’s cooking in Italy, painting in France, or even knitting in Iceland. This approach appeals especially to travelers seeking self-improvement, creativity, and deeper cultural immersion. The trend signifies a move towards value-driven, affordable, and community-oriented holidays where the journey enhances not just relaxation, but also knowledge and growth.
Sofy’s Take
This emerging trend aligns perfectly with what's driving our 'Back to the Origins' based philosophy. Today's travelers are seeking more than just relaxation—they want depth of experience, meaningful connections, and personal growth. What stands out is how these trends move away from passive consumption toward active participation. For designers and hospitality brands, this signals a need to create spaces and experiences that facilitate skill-building and authentic community formation rather than just luxurious isolation.

🌊 Did you know? The beach was once off-limits—until a queen made it chic

In the early 19th century, going to the beach wasn't considered leisure—it was wild, untamed, and mostly avoided by the upper classes. That changed when Queen Isabel II of Spain began spending her summers in San Sebastián, seeking the health benefits of sea bathing.
Her presence turned the beach into a symbol of wellness, status, and style—setting off a coastal craze that spread across Europe. What began as a royal remedy became a global ritual.
🔵 DESIGN – Tools, Principles, and Those Who Practice Them
Principle of the Week
🧭 “Participatory Craftsmanship”
What it means: Across creative pursuits, a trend of "participatory craftsmanship" is emerging where people shape their creative journeys through workshops, maker spaces, and customizable kits. This transforms users from consumers to creators, tapping into the joy of making and personal expression. By engaging directly with processes like woodworking or ceramics, people connect more deeply with their craft, community, and creative potential.

🟠 HUMANISM – getting inspiration from history and culture
📺 What I am watching- Vacation edition recommendations
Foundation (TV series 2021)

Based on Isaac Asimov's groundbreaking science fiction series, Foundation is a visually stunning and intellectually stimulating adaptation that explores the collapse and rebirth of human civilization across the galaxy. With its blend of political intrigue, philosophical depth, and breathtaking visuals, it's perfect for those seeking thought-provoking entertainment during their holiday downtime. If you enjoy epic storytelling that challenges your perception of history and human development, this is a must-watch.
The Wild Robot (Movie 2024)

Based on Peter Brown's award-winning children's novel, The Wild Robot brings a heartwarming story of a robot stranded on an uninhabited island to animated life. As Roz the robot learns to adapt to her natural environment and form bonds with the island's wildlife, the film explores powerful themes of adaptation, belonging, and finding one's place in an unfamiliar world. With its stunning animation and emotionally resonant storytelling, it's a perfect holiday watch for both families and individuals seeking a thoughtful yet accessible adventure.
When Life Gives You Tangerines (TV Series 2025)

I've mentioned this TV show in my previous newsletters, but I want to highlight it again because it's truly worth watching. Set in Jeju, it follows a spirited girl and a steadfast boy whose island story blossoms into a lifelong journey of setbacks and triumphs, demonstrating how love endures across time.
📚 What I’m Reading- Vacation edition recommendations
Rather than sharing what I'm currently reading (still working through book four of the Red Rising saga mentioned in the last newsletter), I'd like to recommend some of my favorite books for your holiday reading. While I could suggest countless titles, I've selected favorites across different genres so everyone can find something appealing!
Fantasy recommendations
Mistborn: The Final Empire- Brandon Sanderson
If you're looking to dive into fantasy literature but aren't sure where to begin, this is the perfect entry point. This fast-paced fantasy thriller introduces a unique magic system where certain people can ingest metals to gain supernatural abilities. The story follows a street urchin who discovers her powers and joins a rebellion against the immortal ruler who has oppressed the world for a thousand years. With its accessible prose, well-crafted characters, and satisfying standalone arc (though it's part of a trilogy), Mistborn offers an excellent entry point to fantasy literature without overwhelming new readers.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
A captivating and enchanting fantasy saga. For those wanting to explore fantasy worlds during their time off, these books offer immersive universes that will transport you far from everyday life. They're perfect companions for quiet evenings or long flights during your holiday travels. Bear in mind that the third book in the series hasn't been published yet, with no confirmed release date. Proceed with caution- you may find yourself waiting indefinitely for the conclusion! 😅

Jade City by Fonda Lee
If you loved the Godfather film trilogy, then "Jade City" is the fantasy equivalent you've been waiting for. Set in a world where jade grants magical powers to those who can harness it, this novel combines epic family drama with martial arts action. Following a powerful clan's struggle for dominance in a city reminiscent of 1970s Hong Kong, it delivers the perfect blend of cultural richness, intricate politics, and visceral combat. The first in a completed trilogy, it's an ideal series to binge during your holiday break.
Novels
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

A Thousand Splendid Suns is Hosseini's powerful follow-up to The Kite Runner, weaving together the stories of two Afghan women across three decades of Afghan history. This heartbreaking yet ultimately hopeful novel explores friendship, family, and sacrifice against the backdrop of a nation in turmoil. It's an emotional read that offers profound insights into the resilience of the human spirit—perfect for those seeking a deeply moving literary experience during their holiday break.
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

I consider this one of the finest examples of historical fiction ever written. If you're seeking an engrossing, substantial book to enjoy during your beach vacation, this is the perfect choice! The novel captivates with its richly detailed 12th-century English setting as it follows the construction of a magnificent cathedral amid political intrigue, war, and personal ambition. At nearly 1,000 pages, it's an immersive escape that combines history, romance, and architectural fascination- ideal for those long, uninterrupted hours of holiday relaxation. This book brilliantly illustrates long-term thinking and "cathedral thinking," challenging readers to reconsider their perspectives on time and legacy.
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

One of my favourite books of all time. This controversial and influential novel centers on society's collapse when creative minds withdraw their talents in protest against collectivism. While its philosophy of rational self-interest remains divisive, the book's exploration of individualism, innovation, and the role of exceptional people in society makes it a thought-provoking read for those interested in philosophical fiction. At over 1,000 pages, it requires commitment but rewards readers with complex characters and ideas that continue to spark debate decades after publication.

Through their friendship, humor, and personal stories, they reveal how to find joy in the face of suffering and cultivate lasting happiness. Perfect for those seeking wisdom and perspective during their holiday downtime.
Humanise by Thomas Heatherwick

This visionary book by renowned designer Thomas Heatherwick explores how we can create buildings and spaces that truly serve human needs and emotions. Drawing from his studio's innovative projects, Heatherwick argues that architecture must prioritize human experience over abstract aesthetics, offering a compelling framework for designing environments that foster wellbeing, connection, and joy. Perfect for those interested in the intersection of design thinking, psychology, and our built environment.
